Health Procedures at Camp
Each of our JMU 4 Kids camp locations are staffed with First Aid and CPR trained staff who work under the supervision of our Health Director, Carrie Carroll, RN. We strive to have a licensed nurse on site daily at all locations, however, there may be times when a licensed nurse will not be on site. In the event of a medical emergency at camp, without a nurse on site, emergency services will be contacted. Furthermore, please be advised that if there is not a licensed nurse on site, medications including Epi pens and inhalers may not be administered by staff. Please see our Medication Policy below for more information.
Illness
Please keep your child at home if they have a fever, cold, or virus. If your child comes to camp sick, you will be required to come and pick up your child immediately.
If your child has a fever (100.2 F or higher) or becomes ill during the camp day you will be notified and asked to make arrangements for the pick-up of your child. If we cannot reach you or another parent/guardian listed, we will attempt to reach your listed emergency contact persons.
Your child must be symptom-free and fever free (without the aid of fever-reducing medication) for 24 hours before returning to camp. If your child was prescribed antibiotics they must be on the antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to camp.
If your child should contract a communicable illness such as chicken pox, COVID-19, pink eye, or lice, we ask that you notify the Camp Health Director at jmu4kids.healthinfo@gmail.com. A doctor’s written consent must be provided before your child will be allowed to return to camp.
Medication Policy
NYS DOH Children’s Summer Camps policy dictates that ONLY New York State licensed medical professionals are allowed to administer medication (including inhalers, Epi-pens and over the counter medications) to campers. In certain circumstances campers may self-administer medication under the direct supervision of a NYS licensed nurse.
All medications being administered at camp, including Epi-pens, inhalers, and over-the-counter medications, require a current signed physician’s medication order along with signed written consent from the parent/guardian. The medication must be in the original container and labeled with the child’s first and last name and dosing instructions. Please hand all medication directly to the nurse on site at the time of drop off.
Medications (including Epi-pens, inhalers and over the counter medications) cannot be transported or administered off primary camp location (ie: bus/pool) as there is not a medical professional available to transport/administer medication off site.
Independent medication carry & administration policy
Campers whose medical team has determined to be mature enough to self-carry and self-administer their emergency medication (inhaler/epi-pen) can do so only after their medical team has filled out the, “Independent Carry and Administer” attestation. A copy of the medication order(s) filled out and signed by both the camper’s doctor and parent, as well as the, “Independent Carry and Administer” attestation need to be submitted to our Health Director, Carrie Carroll, RN. Campers who have been deemed, “Independent” by their medical team and have the necessary paperwork submitted to self-carry and self-administer will need to check in each morning with their camp director, or on-site nurse if applicable, to verify what medication they have on their person. These campers will be allowed to transport their emergency medication (inhaler/epi-pen) with them off site for trips to the pool.
Immunization Records
Per NYS DOH policy each family is required to provide their child’s immunization records. They can be brought to camp on your child’s first day, or emailed to our Health Director at jmu4kids.healthinfo@gmail.com.
